Unless something has changed, the downloaded file is still on your computer, on a mac at least, I think it's under libraries, application support files, itunes, or something similar. You may want to check this and delete the file if it's still there.

Hi, once you have the OS installed, it takes no less space no matter how you did it. It's just that the phone needs some room for temporary storage while it's actually doing the update. That's why some people have ended up deleting quite a bit of space to allow the update to happen.
