Are you on WiFi? That seems very strange. I don't recall how long it took to download Alex, but it was less than 30 minutes and he is 869 MB. It took only a few minutes to down load the British high quality voice.
I'd make sure all your apps are closed out of the app switcher and reboot your phone if you already haven't done that.
