You are correct in saying you have to go ahead and install it, but it will in fact automatically download as long as your phone has enough space on it and it is connected to WiFi and plugged in. A lot of people do plug their phone in over night while it is connected to WiFi so if that is the case you will wake up with iOS 8 downloaded to your phone. You can of course not install it, but it will sit there taking up almost 2 Gb of space.
