Hi Paul,

First of all, Alex only works on devices with a 64 bit processor which as for
old phones is only the 5S. Neither the 5 nor even the 5C has a 64 bit
processor. For the iPad family last year’s iPad Air and iPad Mini Retina 2 are
the only devices which support Alex and no current iPod Touch supports him.

Of course the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus do also have a 64 bit processor, the A8,
one generation ahead from the A7 which is in the 5S, ipad Air and iPad Mini
Retina.

If you have one of these devices, you will find the option to download Alex in
Settings, General, Accessibility, Voiceover, Speech. Double tap on Default
Dialect and here you will find Alex or, if you want the default voice to be the
current high quality female voice, just add a language, select English US and
then download Alex by double tapping on the More button to the right of the US
English voice. This will allow you to turn the rotor to languages and flick
back and forth between the current high quality voice and Alex. I recommend
this because while opinions vary hugely when it comes to TTS voices, I don’t
think very much of Alex on the iPhone, I find the voice sounds muffled and a
lot less clear than the old high quality female voice especially at slightly
higher speech rates.

If you end up liking Alex better but still want access to the female HQ voice,
just select Alex in the default dialect and select the female HQ voice for the
US English option.

Also note that once you downloaded Alex you either have to turn Voiceover off
and back on for him to work or just reboot your phone.

Regards,

Sieghard

Subject: Alex, where are you?

It seems that everything I’ve read about locating Alex and downloading him to
my phone has not worked, or it is a case of extreme operator error; will
someone who has done this please explain how to get Alex and how to select him
as the default voice?

One family phone has IOS8; the other will get it tonight using iTunes, is it
right that Alex, himself, must be downloaded through the phone and that iTunes
will not provide a way to do this?

Paul
