Eve, If you bought the phone on contract it should be only $99 or maybe less if somebody has a promotion.
Apple has a 30-day money back guaranty although I think you said you bought it from Verizon and I don't know their policy. I really think it is a bad idea right now to buy an iPhone 5 and I'm actually surprised Verizon is still selling it. The iPhone 5 was officially discontinued by Apple a year ago when the 5C was introduced. The 5C is the phone with the plastic body/case and basically the same inside as the iPhone 5 but it has a few minor tweeks. I would have assumed carriers at least sell the 5C now which should be a free phone on contract. But I would check with the carrier if you can exchange it and seriously think of getting a 5S which has a faster processor, a 64 Bit processor which will be a lot more "future proof" and it has Touch Id which works fantastically and is a great security feature. Most people don't bother with a passcode on their phones because it's just too much bother to enter it everytime you want to unlock your phone. Touch Id gives you that security and I actually find it easier and faster to unlock my phone with my thumb than to find the unlock button and double tap it without a passcode. If Verizon would still let you get the 5S and you decide to do it all you have to do is do an encrypted backup of your current phone with iTunes (I'd be happy to help) and then go to Settings, General, Reset and Erase All Settings and Data. This will take all your stuff off the phone, then you put the SIM into your new phone and restore from your backup and it's all setup the same as what you have now. I guess I don't want to come across like you really should do this, the iPhone 5 is a nice phone, but it is 2 years old and officially discontinued already for 1 year. Everything is fine although I haven't added any ringtones yet. I purchased an IPhone 5 because the 5 S really didn't come down in price. Thanks!
