Yes, you can set the rotor to handwriting and then write the first few letters 
of an app name and it'll display it. This is done from the home screen, so 
that's why it might be crashing there instead of someplace else. I've also used 
it to enter my passcode, though I'm not so great with handwriting. I ended up 
taking it out of my rotor, since I just don't click with it, but it seems like 
quite a useful utility for lots of folks.
