Did you have the phone plugged in while you were doing the upgrade or did your battery die during the upgrade? I can't remember if it allows you to even start an update if your battery is low, but if it does and your battery dies in the middle of it then this could definitely cause problems. To do this, after connecting the phone to iTunes, hold down the Home and Power buttons together for about six seconds, then release the power button while keeping the Home button held down until iTunes detects the phone in DFU mode.
