I now see that pressing that same tone does work; thank you.
Better than restarting the phone which I did last time.

I think you're confusing two different bugs. Switching keyboards is the
work around needed to fix issues with the bluetooth keyboard support. I
think for the stuck numbers bug you can try removing the phone app from
your app switcher. I haven't hit either of these bugs yet myself, so you
might be best waiting for someone else to weigh in or checking the list
archives.
