Airdrop allows you to send various files from one Airdrop enabled device to another. If, for example, you have an iPhone 5S and an iPad Mini Retina or iPad Air you can go to Control Centre and turn on Airdrop. You can then share contacts or songs wirelessly. I guess this is more meant if you want to share a photo or song with somebody else since if you use the same Apple Id on multiple devices chances are these items are already on both devices.
