Backing up before you update is not required, but it is definitely very highly recommended. If there is a problem with your update process and you don't backup, you don't have a prior working version to go back to, which is why you want to backup before you update. You can either backup with iTunes or iCloud. You can update over the air or when connected to your PC or Mac with iTunes. I will leave the detailed steps of upgrading to someone else. Before you update, it is a good idea to close all currently running apps in your App Switcher, and even to reboot your phone so you can start fresh. It may seem like you are going to a lot of steps before you update, but remember, you do these steps so that if problems happen you can resolve them without too much effort.
