Ok, fiddled, it's pretty good. Use the edge, not the flat back. Then it told me a positive or negative number. I used the long edge, and it said horizontal; I stood it on end and it said vertical. with it facing me, the number quoted seemed to quote the number for the low end, I'm avoiding saying left and right. But since the long edge is better for accuracy, putting it against something horizontal or vertical does get the right response and does seem consistent with it's finding. Don't use the edge with buttons on. I assume you could turn the Iphone so that it is edge on to you so it would represent the level to you and away from you. I have never thought about this til now. I just tried laying my phone flat on a table and then lifting each of the 4 sides slightly and it does seem to give level readings on all side. I am unsure how to interpret this but maybe you can figure it out. How do I determine which value is which i.e. when I place the iPhone on a flat surface there is the level from left to right and the level to me and away from me if that makes sense. Just tap the spirit level and it will do just that. I use it to make sure pictures and other things are level. It isn't absolutely 100% accurate but it is very close.
