I haven't had trouble pairing.
The sluggishness is a given with iOS 8 for input. Reading is OK. The only way I can seem to get things paired is to use 8-dot uncontracted Braille. I haven't had time to check it out on the Humanware Braillenote Apex, but on the HIMS U2, even if you can get it paired, it seems to be sluggish.
