It actually will not send automatically, after you record and let go of the 
button you have to find the Send button and tap it.
As Joseph pointed out, you can only send audio messages as iMessages to other 
iOS users and 2-way audio message conversations are only possible if both iOS 
devices are running iOS 8. You can, however, send an audio message to somebody 
using iOS 7, they just can't reply with an audio message.
I also find that the quality of the audio is fairly poor when compared to Whats 
App; it sounds like you are listening to something recorded over a phone line 
and I am actually a bit surprised that Apple isn't allowing for higher quality 
audio

go to your messages app and the record audio button is within the area where 
you’d normally write your text message.  Double tap and hold on the record 
button and say what you want to say while still holding the button.  when you 
are done recording, let go of the button and it’ll send automactially.
