Hi Craig,

I don't know if it is Voiceover accessible or not, but do you already own
compatible hardware? I had a quick look at this online and it seems like Bose
is trying to jump onto the Sonos bandwagon. I didn't check pricing for the
various speakers, but while Bose is not exactly a high-end brand, it also isn't
cheap and unless you already bought the speakers/players, I would highly
recommend that you take a good look at Sonos. I think they are still the leader
with this sort of stuff and with respect to the variety of product they are
offering. Sonos players start at $199 for the Play 1, $299 for the Play 3 and
$399 for the Play 5. These are all self-contained players with high quality
Class D amplifiers. The Play 1 has 1 speaker, the Play 3 has 3 speakers and the
Play 5 has 5 and sounds awesome. You can buy 2 of any of these and set them up
as a stereo pair for even better sound.
Then there is of course the Sonos's surround sound/TV solution, the Playbar. It
is not cheap at $700, but it's amazing given it's size. It is about 3 feet
long, but not very high and deep, but it contains a total of 9 speakers and
really sounds great. You can add the Sonos Sub which is also $700 and it's even
more amazing. It is about the size of a midsize computer tower, but it weighs
36 pounds and the base it produces is truly outstanding. If you want to
complete a 5.1 surround system, you can add 2 Play 1 speakers as rear speakers.
I just bought the Playbar and Sub to see if I could live with the step down
from my Sony receiver and rather good front, centre and rear speakers. But I
wanted to de-clutter my living room and while the Playbar doesn't produce quite
the sound stage and separation that you get with a pair of high-end speakers
which are 8 or 10 feet apart, it really is very nice and I am going to sell my
Sony receiver. I just ordered the 2 Play 1 speakers to complete the surround
sound setup now that I decided to keep it. Sonos has an amazing 45-day money
back guaranty so you really can't go wrong to try it and they support way more
music services than Bose. Their customer service is outstanding and while it
took a while to get them to that point, they now have done an outstanding job
in making the Sonos app fully accessible and it's a joy to use it. Also setting
up my Playbar and Sub was just one of these Wow experiences. Steve Jobbs used
to always say how Apple products were just like magic and his "It just works"
was quite famous. Well, you can say that about setting up a Sonos system. You
just open the app and in my case I said I wanted to add a new Sonos player. It
then asked me to press the Mute button together with the volume up button on
the Playbar. Within a few seconds the app recognized that it was a Playbar and
I was guided step by step through the process of setting it up, optimizing the
sound and then I was asked if I wanted to add a Sub. I said Yes and after
pressing the connect button on the Sub I was able to set it up the way I liked
with respect to how much base it provided. Then I was told to push the volume
up button on my TV remote a few times, the app said it recognized the signal
and I was basically done. I can now use my TV remote or my satellite remote and
set it to TV and turn the volume up and down on the Playbar. My TV's volume is
turned off in settings and all I had to do is connect the Playbar's optical
audio in port to my TV's optical audio out port with the provided cable.
Sonos can also play all the music on your iPhone or any other iOS device where
you install the Sonos app. You can also point Sonos to your iTunes Media/Music
folder or and it will index all the music there so you can play it directly.
Even better and that is what I have done is to put all your music on a network
attached hard drive if you have one. Then point Sonos to that folder and you
can play all your music without even turning on your computer.

OK, I guess I promoted Sonos enough now *smile*, but ever since they did such a
great job with accessibility I recommend them without reservation and their
product gets 5 Stars in my book. By now I have invested quite a bit in their
stuff, but I also have music in just about every room in my house and its an
investment I don't regret whereas I did somewhat regret spending $1,500 on my
Sony surround sound receiver 5 years ago. It's an awesome receiver but I never
used even half of what it can do and of course a lot of the functions are not
accessible since I bought it about a year or so before they came out with a
network capable version of it where I might have been able to use an app to
control it. Of course I have no idea if the app would have been accessible and
once you are hooked on Sonos it's hard to go back to something that is less fun
and accessible.

Regards,
Sieghard

Subject: Using the iPhone with the Bose SoundTouch App

Hello, everyone.

SoundTouch is an app made by Bosed to allow the SoundTouch audio system to work
with smartphones and computers. Has anyone used this app? I can't turn up any
information on the net about whetehr this app is VoiceOver-friendly. I thought
before I called Bose that I would ask about it here.

Thank you for all help.

Craig
