Turn off Automatic Translation; use eight-dot Braille input. Those are
my two. You can have six-dot contracted braille output at the same time
as the above in 8.1.1. I find this fast enough.

I use my Focus40 Blu to take notes both on an iPhone5 and an iPod Touch
5th Generation. With 8.1.1, it still takes a few seconds for the braille
characters to be entered into the device after typing them on the
braille display's Perkins style keyboard.
Some people claim to have had luck playing with the auto translate
feature, but I still haven't found any reliable way of doing this. So
for now, I'm not happy about braille entry from an external braille
display in IOS 8.1.1.
Suggestions appreciated.

I use a Focus 40 Blue Classic and a REfreshaBraille with my 5S running
8.1.1, and both displays work. yOu'll love the auto-panning feature
when reading eBooks; when you get to the bottom of one screen, the
phone switches automatically to the next. There's a Find command,
Space with F, that works on web pages and in apps like Read2Go. The
only down side is that Quick Nav is turned on by default when you
install 8.1.1, and the braille display command that's meant to toggle
it, Space with Q, doesn't work. So if you use BARD Mobile to read
braille books, you need to use a Bluetooth keyboard to turn off Quick
Nav if you want to use the letter commands built into the app, such as
S for Search. Otherwise, I'm very pleased with braille support.
