Hi Mike, direct touch typing is actually a pretty good description of how the feature works. Rather than dragging your finger around the screen and lifting your finger when you find the character you were looking for, direct touch typing is designed for you to tap the character exactly. It requires good muscle memory, but particularly on an iPhone 6 Plus or an iPad, you can get speeds comparable to regular touch typing on a PC or Mac with it if you practice enough and make good use of auto-correct.
