You should be able to check if you have enough free space by going into
Settings -> General -> Software Updates. If you don't have enough space,
you'll see this on the screen. Note that swiping doesn't work in this
screen. You'll need to slide your finger around on the screen to find
the information.
Note that if you use iTunes to perform the install, you'll need a lot
less free space. I did it this way since I wanted to grab an encrypted
backup first, and I didn't have enough space on my iPhone 4S.
You can also free up storage to make enough space, either by removing
media from the phone or removing apps. Everything is easy enough to put
back after the install. Note that I've read that IOS 8 adoption is
slower than releases in the past and it seems to be because IOS 8
requires more free space than previous versions. People don't have the
free space on their phones and aren't taking the time to free up more space.
