I think the difference in the way the list is shown is the important thing. I
am still using IOS 7, by the way and the list showed up with all the dates and
the no event, 1 event, etc. after each date with no details except at the
bottom.
I wanted the list shown the previous way which was just a list with only the
dates that had appointments with each appointment listed right after the date.
But the tricky part is that I can’t remember exactly how I got it into this
format. Three times it has reverted back to the first, useless list and I spent
a good chunk of time trying every combination of VO gestures until I eventually
got the streamlined useful list. The three times were months apart so I can’t
remember exactly what worked to switch it to the better list even though the
last time I was trying to pay attention so I could put it in my notes. It seems
that maybe the gesture was something at the bottom of the screen but I am not
going to take a chance on replicating it until I have to as it was very
frustrating.
The “good” list also starts with dates from the past but tapping the “Today”
button at the lower left and then the middle of the screen puts me in the right
place.

Hopefully, the “good” list is the default in IOS 8 so that when I finally am
forced to upgrade that will be one benefit.

When I was having trouble getting to the list I preferred I downloaded an app
called Calendars 5 which does give a concise list of appointments and also
includes the reminders in the same list. I really like it but I downloaded it
for free from Apps Gone Free and I think it is $6.99 now. It coordinates the
calendar app and the reminders app into one list. This also allows you to use
Siri to enter calendar events and Reminders and they show up in the Calendars 5
app as well.
Here is the link to the info about the app:

I never even have to flick up or down to find details, I just double tap the
event and it opens. I'm not sure why you have to, but at least it works. :) As
to repeating events, the update to the calendar in iOS8 lets you specify far
more detailed repeat intervals than ever before, such as every other Friday or
Monday and Thursday of every two weeks. Fantastical still wins when creating
events, as you said, and its different interface and ability to combine
calendar events and reminders in one place is helpful. I just don't find it to
offer anything I can't already do that I need - I prefer keeping my reminders
and calendars separate, and entering events is slower but doable. I'm not
saying one is better than the other, but if the OP spends more time with the
native app, he might find he can save $5.

I have to admit, I have not used the native calendar app in a long time,
  I just went into it.
First, double tap on the day of the event you want to check.
You will get a list of your appointments from that day forward.
Touch the event you want more details on or want to edit.
Flick up or down until it says details and double tap.
I now have a screen with just that event, with an edit button in the upper
right and a delete event button at the bottom of the screen just above the home
button.
  It actually works quite well.

I still prefer the ease of entering events in Fantastical 2 and in
particular, the ease of setting up repeating events on say, Monday, Wednesday,
Friday, etc.
Once you get the hang of the phrasing, you can do those kinds of events in
one string in Fantastical 2.
But, for straight forward calendaring, I will say the native app seems to be
just fine.

For the record, I've never had trouble with the native app. I got Fantastical
while it was on sale a couple months back, but I never use it. I don't see what
it offers me, besides far easier appointment adding, that the native app does
not.

As to listing events, don't flick to them - you'll start way back in the
past, as you discovered. Instead, touch the middle of the screen, or wherever
the list is displayed, and you will land on the current or nearest event. You
can't delete holiday events because those are on a public (read-only) calendar.
The hint you hear, and the delete gesture, don't know that, so VoiceOver still
presents the option even though it will do nothing. I'm not sure what you mean
about not being able to view event details - double tapping an event should
open that event. Again, the public holidays calendar may not support this, I'm
not sure.

My advice is to buy FantastiCal 2 for the iPhone.
It pulls the information in your native Calendar app, but is much easier to
use. If you are interested in more details about it, let me know and I will
give you some more detailed examples.
You may want to first read the app description in the app store.

      Hi,

I seem to be totally flummoxed by the native Calendar app.

I’ve put in Events and have the USA Holidays app that automatically loads
US Holiday dates.

Sometimes I go into Calendar and click List, and get Holidays and Events
starting June 2013, even though it’s now December 2014. If I one finger flick
to delete, then double tap to delete, delete announces but delete doesn’t
happen.

Other times, I go to a date with an event. It states there is an event
and announces to double tap the button to get details about the event. When I
Double tap on the button, I only get a page with Calendar Headings but no info.

Is there a recommended resource I can go to to figure out the native
Calendar app using Voiceover? Any guidance will be most appreciated.

      Thanks in advance. Keith.
