I maintain the port/package for FreeBSD. Here is a build log of the package
from source, and it runs on FreeBSD. Maybe this log would offer you a clue
of what is required.
This is built in a clean environment, so the system has all the software
included to build and run the software whereas there is no software on the
sytem to begin with. Only what is required is added.
