Anthony presented a newer solution based on GIOEventLoop at KVM Forum
last month:

Plan is to merge this in 1.4.

These have been tried to be pushed upstream a couple of times, with
not much luck.  Hopefully, with the rest of the series not being
needed (due to the tree above), we won't need these preparatory
patches.
