VirtualGL should work for the vast majority of OpenGL applications. It will not work if the application is statically linked with OpenGL, but this is exceedingly rare, since such an application also would not be able to take advantage of hardware-accelerated 3D. Compatibility issues can also arise if the application requires a certain X extension that isn't available in TurboVNC, but this is also very rare. I am starting to use the SourceForge Tracker to keep track of such issues, so I am asking anyone on this list to please reply to this thread or post a Tracker item if you know of a specific app that doesn't work with VGL (or any other long-standing issue that hasn't been addressed yet.) As far as I know, there only 2 or 3 outstanding issues that don't have a tracker associated with them yet, and they can be found in the October and November 2009 archives of this list. > 2. Are there a list of known applications that do not run in either > VirtualGL or TurboVNC ? I don't maintain such a list, but I would like to start using the Tracker to keep track of such things. Traditionally, whenever a user reports that an app doesn't work, I will try my best to make it work before the next release. If the app requires a work-around or other special procedure, this is always documented in the "Application Recipes" section of the User's Guide. > 3. Once the transition happens to TigerVNC is VirtualGL going to be > actively developed ? Are there going to be continued updates to > VirtualGL ? Absolutely. VirtualGL and TigerVNC are separate entities. I would like to replace TurboVNC with TigerVNC in the long term, but VirtualGL will still be needed to give TigerVNC hardware-accelerated 3D capabilities. > 4. Are there any commercial support providers for VirtualGL/TurboVNC, > that you would recommend ? http://www.cendio.com/ Their ThinLinc product contains TigerVNC and VirtualGL. They are good people to work with. RayDesk also purports to use VirtualGL, but I have no experience with the product or the company. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Join us December 9, 2009 for the Red Hat Virtual Experience, a free event focused on virtualization and cloud computing.
