Sure - -d indicates to VirtualGL what X display to use for the *3D server*. $DISPLAY indicates to VirtualGL what X display to display to. VirtualGL's job is to redirect 3D rendering from $DISPLAY to the display indicated by -d. You were effectively asking it to take 3D commands from :1 and redirect them to :1 - and :1 doesn't have the GLX extension.
