VirtualGL doesn't support that particular GLX extension (yet.) If you were 
trying to run Gnome in VGL to get compositing support, you'll have to use 
another method of compositing in the window manager. Otherwise, if you're just 
trying to run 3D apps in VGL, then start the WM first without VGL, then use 
vglrun only with the 3D apps you want to run.
