The explanation is that Xpra, unlike TurboVNC, does actually have some GLX
extension support, provided you use software Mesa. VirtualGL is not *needed* in
that setup, and besides, it's not necessarily working well with Mesa-based open
source drivers. (You may get crashes with certain drivers.)

You really do want to install the nVidia driver, and set up VirtualGL properly.
