I can't say evolution isn't working with VGL. Without VGL evolution don't 
start at all. With VGL it start but crash in one situation (when I want to 
open compose message window).
I do not us tightvnc. I use x2go, it's very good, very fast free client server 
application, free substitution Nomachine NX. 

I looked at description of turbovnc and it seems to me, that it is for 3d 
application and for not 3d x11 application Nomachine solution will be better.
I don't want use vgl for 3d application, vgl is only patch to make evolution 
usable.
I don't think problem is debian specific I thing problem is gnome v 3.x 
specific. Debian squeeze has gnome ver 2.30 wheezy gnome 3.4.

My workaround is that I don't use evolution now, but other email program 
(kmail). I made this change a half  year ago, but  kmail still annoying me.
