It's ok for dev-machines, as all tools are around, but it's the different story for production. Cross-combiling is too complicated. Giving sysadmin link to .deb/.rpm is the only way which works, sometimes. Large companies can afford to have their own build-factories for the software they use, but that's too complex for smaller companies. On the other hand, there's a good chance that large companies would use commercial version, anyway.
