Hi,
Assume a tool does not know about Virtuoso SQL dialect and is asking
me to choose a target dialect for generation. Which one is closest? (

Virtuoso supports: SQL-89, SQL-92, SQL3 (also known as SQL 200n). With
regards to what RDBMS you would align it to syntactically and
architecturally (RDBMS side only), look to SQL Sever (Microsoft or
Sybase). Basically, RDBMS genealogy has two main branches: Decision
Support (Oracle, Ingres, DB2) and OLTP (Sybase, SQL Server, and to some
degree Informix which is kinda hybrid i.e. handled both sides well).
Virtuoso started off an OLTP oriented DBMS prior to us adding the
Decision Support (so it does TPC-D/H benchmarks very well) and a
plethora of other aspects over the years.
