The commercial version of virtuoso has a 'virtual database' capability. You can
create tables within virtuoso that are links to tables within other rdbms. It's
then possible to create rdf views and either materialize the triples or query
the rdbms data directly.
Thank you for this! It sounds like exactly what I need. After digging through
the documentation for a while it seems that this the bit that's needed to
materialize the views.

http://docs.openlinksw.com/virtuoso/rdfperformancetuning.html#rdb2rdftriggers

And, I guess, to keep track of what changes in the resulting RDF we create a
snapshot log of RDF_QUAD using this:

http://docs.openlinksw.com/virtuoso/SNAPSHOT.html#COMMANDS

Based on that I think we can use SQL on the snapshot table to see what the
changes are and produce an Atom feed of changes, plus fragments for individual
changes.

Does this sound reasonable, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

In a nutshell, but its a little easier that that. All you do is use the RDF Views Wizard to make Views from Remote/External ODBC or JDBC accessible DSNs. As part of the Wizard's functionality you can indicate if you want the RDF Views materialized. Change sensitivity is integral to Materialized RDF Views. In addition, you also get dereferencable URIs for Data Entities.

Additional bonus to all of the above is the ability to use Microsoft PivotViewer (across all major browsers under Windows and Mac OS X) as a front to all of this re. out of the box BI capability.
