I found out that when exceeding SMS length via the * AMI you get

Asterisk exited on signal 6.
Automatically restarting Asterisk.
mpg123: nessun processo terminato
try with more than 158 characters.
Not a problem anyways, since I regulate max length by checking it on
application side now... But in case you wanna fix it....
