I'm very much for making this work in some ways, and we should experiment.
I also think it important that the remote hubs include people who are
not newbies. For financial reasons, I don't make IETF100, but I would
be happy to travel within Ottawa (i.e. stay at a hotel, even though I live
here), to Montreal or Toronto, or perhaps even Boston. Although, for the
purposes of dealing with VISA issues, "enhancing" Boston might be a mistake.

I have done many meetings in my PJs :-)
Ottawa->Europe is relatively easy, as the meetings start at 3am-ish, and I
just have to go to bed early and get up early. The meetings are over
by 2pm local, which means that as far as my child and wife are concerned,
means they see *more* of me.

For Ottawa->Asia, it's a complete ~12h time reversal, and it's rather
difficult to explain to child that I'm asleep. And the house isn't quiet
enough to sleep, etc. So going someplace would be a great thing.

Yes, that's true, but:
1) we don't need a 5-star $250USD/night hotel.
2) we don't need to accomodate 1000 people and food, etc.
3) the meeting rooms (I like having 8!) could be rather small, and
could be cobbled together from many company meeting spaces, assuming
they are willing to deal with the time zone challenge to their
   physical security.

I actually think this is a good experiment to try, and I'm willing to
participate in such an experiment.
