You are being justifably paranoid.

My production volumes have MY names on them. The second level maintenance
system is as IBM delivers it with 310RES or 430RES or 510RES, etc. This
makes it easy to load the new release onto new volumes and still be able to
maintain my production system from the old volumes.

Since my production volumes have no relationship to the IBM maintenance
layout, I have to come up with my own migration mechanism for updated
minidisks. I define NEW copies of the production areas, adjusting the
allocation to match the new definitions in my maintenance system. Then I do
a mass DDR of minidisks from second level to first level. Then I can do the
final testing and swap (and swap-back if necessary). When I am in production
on the new level, the old level can be deleted. If it is a release change,
like 5.1 to 5.2, then I can ddr dump the 510xxx volumes and relabel them for
other use.
