Ah, that isn't new.  My father told me about doing it in North Dakota in the 
1930s.  Except they called it apple-jack.  
He also said that it would knock you on your a$$.  He said that apple-jack was 
why they always put up cider in 
wooden kegs:  to make it easier (using the old hand-drills) to bore through the 
ice.
