Hi
Mike,
I
don't doubt that use of vitamin megadoses over long periods of time would have
consequences, but relatively short periods of time should pose no problems for
most "otherwise healthy" people. I don't think this is a "placebo effect"
because neither my operator nor I had any expectations that this would help, but
it did nevertheless - a LOT. :)
I
guess the best thing to do is weigh any costs and health risks concerns, and
then decide if you want to try it if/when the opportunity presents itself.
As for me, I wouldn't hesitate in the future - I was simply amazed at how much
better I fealt, and this particular cold I have is a really nasty one - been
with me over two months (and turned into bronchitous twice).

Michael,
Interesting timing. I arrived home today to read an article on Airborne, Wal-born, and another something-borne spin-off in the "Consumers Reports" magazine that arrive in today's mail. In general, it said there have been no reliable studies to back up the claims (which cannot not refute your personal results).
It does warn about the cost, and the side-effect of mega-doses of vitamin C (including kidney problems for some). Anyone considering using these products owes their health the time to review the article (usually available at public libraries if you do not subscribe or are too, uh, "frugal" to buy it) and evaluate the possibilities in their situation.

TRUE STORY:
I've had a REALLY bad cold for TWO MONTHS now, and can't (couldn't) shake it.
It developed into bronchitous twice during that time. I'm getting plenty of
rest, etc. etc. - but I simply could not shake this cold.
A friend had told me about Airborne, which is basically MEGA-Doses of Vitamins,
in particular Vitamin C. You take it 3-4 times per day and it gives your immune
system a "jump start". I tried it. Guess what - IT WORKED!!! I still have
some 'lingering effects' of the cold, but I feel SO much better now.
PART II:
I had to visit a client in Washington, D.C. this week. My computer operator
came into my office with a very recognizable hacking cough. I asked her if she
had heard of Airborne. She said that she had, and had tried it - and it didn't
help. I asked her if she took it 3-4 times per day as instructed and she said
"No, just once per day". I told her to try it again, following the instructions
this time. She immediately ran out to the drug store, bought some more, and
took 2-3 doses inside of 4-5 hours. She came to me at the end of the day -
nose, throat and lungs were MUCH better. I talked to her first thing today and
the cold is all but gone.
They say if you take this at the first signs of a cold, it will prevent the cold
from "taking hold". Hey, particularly where we just learned that cough medicine
doesn't work - you may want to give this a try (and no, I have no financial
interest in the company). :)
PS: This stuff is also available in less expensive "generic" packaging, for
example I use 'Wal-Borne' which is Walgreen's version of it. :)
