Hello Randy,

        I have VARIED the path and then the CHPID, leaving one
available.
We had 6 chpids at TELXON but that was an EMC system back in 2000.

        We did 5 chpids, upgraded, varied back online.  Then did the
last
CHPID.  Seems to me that the problem is the open systems don't keep
track 
of where you are in your I/O.  They issue a retry when they don't work
but it is a manual retry (typically).

        IBM expects responses and it must be from the correct path.
If you drop all paths/chpids, you have lost your system.
