Over New Year's weekend we migrated a VM/ESA 2.4.0 system (heavy CMS app
usage) to z/VM 5.1 (sadly z/VM 5.2 showed up the day before migration --
too late to use it, but that's in progress starting Monday). We were
running on a z800 so we did not have to change hardware platforms
(although we had to set up another LPAR in which to test z/VM 5.1 since it
requires 64-bit addressing which VM/ESA could not provide).

We made sure all the ISV products were current before allowing users to
test.
- All IBM products were upgraded (except DFSMS RMS for an IBM VTS where
we have a beta-test of the code shipped in z/VM 5.2)
- We had the Network associates go through the TCPIP config with us
(several changes).
- Our VM/ESA CP exits were re-assembled, but did not require any
refitting (coded per standards the first time). I've been warned to very
closely examine CP exits to ensure that they conform to z/VM 5.2
standards.
- There was nothing in particular that was any different from previous
releases (merging directories is always a difficult issue that cannot be
resolved too far ahead of time).
- System stability has been the expected and usual 100%. No outages. Good
job IBM!
- I think we have opened only one PMR for a minor problem with FTP (which
has always been there, but just discovered).
- As always, do your homework. Check the Installation Buckets and PSP
buckets.

Subject
ZVM 3.1 migration to ZVM 5.2 and Z890

We are moving from a Multiprise 2003 ZVM 3.1 system to a Z890 ZVM 5.2
system.

For those of you having done this, are there things outside the normal
course of action I should know?

Success stories are also welcome.

Any problems with SFS, TCPIP, VTAM, VM:Secure, DYNAMCMS, etc??

Thanks in advance.
