Turns out that gcc doesn't squawk about assigning a char* to a const char * unless -pedantic is on(!). It hardly seems pedantic to me, but what do I know.
So, that first batch of consting went out without the benefit of the proper checks. There's a new patch I'll have tonight, and it has that (and other) mismatches fixed.
