Dear Laurentiu,
I think you'd be better off using the Contrib folder, adding classes directly
inside the VTK source tree is not a good idea. What you would typically do is
create your own project outside of VTK and link to it, but practically speaking
this is what the Contrib folder provides.
Model your class following the classes in Contrib (add VTK_VMTK_CONTRIB_EXPORT
between class and the class name - this is a portability thing), and add the
file name to the CMakeLists.txt file in Contrib.
