Hi Oliver,
 there's something you can do to characterize elliptical cross-sections.
First compute centerlines, then use 
vmtkcenterlinesections -ifile model.vtp -centerlinesfile centerlines.vtp -ofile 
sections.vtp
The sections dataset will contain min size and max size (taken as the min and 
max distance
of the section to the intersection of the centerline and the section plane) and 
area.
