Douglas, I think you hit the nail on the head with the "turnaround" times.  The
real issue here is of course the latency of the requests.

TightVNC does a great job of compressing transmissions, and of course the
downloads will be heavier than the uploads.  The problem is you will probably
have to assess the lag in transmission receipt, which could be a significant
problem.  I don't know how satellite systems customarily do their queuing, but
if they are optimized for large transfers and take some time to initiate them,
they have a lag in each burst of VNC traffic which could cause the "feel" of the
connection speed to be anywhere from poor to abysmal.
