kde and process communication problems

I tried this before, but now I'll try it again...

I have rh 7.3 installed with kde v3.  I have vncserver set up to start as a
service and run kde.  From vnc everything works fine, but when I log into
the normal desktop I get all sorts of interprocess communication errors,
even when I try to open simple text files.  Any ideas?
