OK, Thanks. It's somewhat clear. One can twist into a pretzel thinking about it. I just tried the viewer with -truecolour and depth 24, but still getting 8bpp truecolour. I'm assuming that the sun box hosting the viewer is not capable of 24-bit true color (maybe it's using its color map to emulate 8-bit true colour, if that's possible).
I got the idea of what you described re. both the vncserver and the host sun box just be capable of 24-bit true color to realize such visual, but it seems odd that the capability of the host sun box should come into play at all, since it is really only a virtual desktop i.e. doesn't even have to be associated with a real graphics card or display. In principle, the software should be able to treat the graphic information in the same way as if there was a 24-bit true colour visual, and convert that data to whatever format is requested by the remote viewer. Anyway, you've done quite a bit to cast light on it, and I don't expect you to provide an X-tutorial (or graphics tutorial) on line. Thanks.
