The firewall WAS in fact on, but I had to remove vnc, remove registry
entries, reboot, remove the tightvnc folder, and reinstall all after
removing the xp firewall option... all is ok now.

    Which side are you having troubles with?  Server or client side?
I'm
assuming server, so here's a possible explanation.
You may have the built-in XP firewall running, which will interfere with
any
connections comming into the box.  Go into the Network control panel,
and
bring up the properties of the connection you are wanting to use.  Click
on
the right-most tab; if there is a check mark beside "Enable Firewall"
(or
something like that - I"m working from <faulty> memory here) then remove
the
check mark.  You might want to restart the box, but I don't think that
should be necessary.
