I had a problem that sounds similar. I could connect, but the connection was being immediately closed. Using RRE or Raw compression, I could sometimes stay connceted for 15-20 seconds before the connection closing. I fixed it by going into the registry of the server machine and removing all references to WinVNC, then re-installing.
