Steps to setup vnc on a system:
- install vnc on vncserver machine
- If the vncserver machine also runs a firewall, open port 5900 for the
viewer communication (and optionally port 5800 for the java viewer applet)
- get vnc going on that machine, check with the vncviewer binary on an
(other) local machine if the server runs properly.

Now go to the viewer side:
- copy the vncviewer binary (vncviewer for unix, vncviewer.exe for
M$Windows) to that machine. (or install vnc too)
- setup the route between the machines (ping from viewer to server)
- Start vncviewer.

If for some reason vncviewer cannot start on the viewer machine, then start
using the java applet.
