Hello vnc-list,

I've got a weird situation that's got me puzzled.

I have an IBM ThinkPad A21p running Windows 2000 Pro. This machine
migrates between home and work (and a few other places, too). At home,
I have a ThinkPad 770ED running Red Hat Linux 7.2 with current
updates. At work, I have an HP system running Red Hat Linux 7.2 with
current updates. At home, I have a LinkSys router that connects my
home system to AT&T Broadband cable. At work, I have an Efficient
Networks 5861 DSL Router that connects my work system to SBC Ameritech
DSL.

In each case, I have the routers configured to pass the SSH port
(22/tcp) through from the Internet to the Linux box. In each case, the
Linux box is set up to accept the SSH login. In each case, the SSH
login works correctly and I can reach a shell prompt. I can do this
either using PuTTY or Kermit-95 2.0.

I have Kermit-95 and PuTTY each configured for a "work" configuration
which maps local port 5996 to port 5901 on my work address (where I
have a VNC Server running as :1). I also have a pair of "home"
configurations which map local port 5924 to port 5901 on my home
address (where I also have a VNC Server running as :1).

When sitting at home, I can fire up the Kermit-95 connection to my
work machine and then tunnel VNC by telling it to connect to
localhost:96. This works beautifully.

When sitting at home, I can fire up a VNC connection directly to my
home Linux box by telling VNC to connect to atreyu:1. This works
beautifully.

When sitting at work, I can fire up a VNC connection directly to my
work Linux box by telling VNC to connect to that system's local name
:1. This works beautifully.

However, when sitting at work, I cannot get the VNC connection to
localhost:24 to connect through the SSH tunnel. Shortly after I
attempt the connection, doing a netstat on the home Linux box shows a
connection in the SYN_SENT state, whether the SSH tunnel is via PuTTY
or Kermit-95. AFter a while, this connection goes away. I see nothing
regarding the attempted tunnel connection in any logs I've found.

Any ideas on what I should be looking for to allow the connection into
my home system over the SSH tunnel would be appreciated. Thanks!

Ron.
