WinVNC currently has a bug that shows up when it is used on Win9x machines that are either slow, over a slow connection or high resolution/number of colours. The affected system will quickly run out of system resources and crash if the initial connection is not established fast enough. I have also seen it happen during a session when there are a lot of big changes happening on the screen. The problem does not affect systems running operating systems based on Windows NT technology such as NT 4.0, Windows 2000 and XP. I would strongly suggest that you try TightVNC instead. It can be downloaded from the authors web site at http://www.tightvnc.com/. The author fixed most of the bug a while ago and recently fixed a speed related issue that occurred as a result of the original fix. In addition, you will find many nice extras included like high data compression, less bugs, more flexible password configuration, prompt the user for permission to connect, and more. Alternatively you can wait until the bug is fixed in the next release of WinVNC. I have not seen any time frame (this month, next month, next year ....). All I know is that the author of WinVNC has stated that the bug will be fixed in the next release. If you really want to stick with WinVNC for some reason, you may be able to work around the problem by reducing the screen resolution, reducing the number of colours displayed on the screen and/or setting WinVNC to only use 8-bits (256 colours). These changes might be enough to establish your initial connection.
