Heather,
I applaud your honesty. It is uncommon to see people on the internet that
actually give a real account of their knowledge. Now, to the point. There
are ways to tunnel the traffic that usually flows on ports 5900(VNC viewer) or
5800(Browser interface) through a port that your works firewall has open. As
Hooper mentioned this might get you into trouble. I find it unlikely that
anyone will really give you that much of a hassle. It is kind of like
crossing the street outside of the crosswalk, illegal but not really enforced.
Fortunately though, VNC is a very well known program. I have worked at
several large computer software development companies and they have all used
VNC. Now that I think of it, tunneling might not be the only answer. VNC can
be set to run on any port, just find one that your firewall lets through (80
http, 21 ftp, 110 pop3). On the other hand if you firewall has packet
filtering it might not accept this method. If you decide that tunneling is
the best way around your problem then I recommend ZeBeDee. It is a very nice
tunneling program that is also free and can most likely solve your problem.
It will take all of the traffic and tunnel it through the specified port. I
don't really have time to explain and I hope everything stated here will not
only make sense but is correct as well. I must follow Heather' lead and admit
that I am only trying to help be throwing out some ideas and do not claim to
be a pro in any way.
So those are my thoughts (Scatter brained as they are) I will post on tuesday
with an actual model of what i proposed if no one else can.
