I also get WinXp Pro recently and tried remote desktop.
It works really faster over 64Kbps connection.

Remote desktop document says remote desktop server
redirect video and key (and may be sound) to 
virtual drivers, and redirect to the network.

Problem reside on virtual drivers. WinDRV version work
much faster on windows.

Seems still hidden in depth of windows.

Another possibility is use RDP to VNC proxy server.
