Two possibilities on your font problem.
One is font path problem. You real X server and Xvnc server use
different set of fonts, so some fonts cannot be shown on X.
Another one is font rendering. Recent X server contains special
font rendering functions (such as for TrueType), and Xvnc does
not have such functions. Your case seems later one.
You should try another Xvnc server,
http://xf4vnc.sourceforge.net/
It is based on up to date XFree86 and having lot of
new functionalities.
