There are several choices for networking DOS up to
a TCP/IP stack.

I used TCP/IP for DOS (by IBM) with students. Another
choice (free) is PowerLAN.

I tried running Windows 3.1 under TCP/IP for DOS but there
were compatibility issues.

So, I finally gave in, and went to 3.11 (Workgroups for Windows).

Note: this does NOT come with TCP/IP -- there is a separate
install floppy !

At this moment I am composing this e-mail in Netscape 3.04,
under 3.11, it will be gatewayed via NAT32 (highly recommended
NAT, see http://www.nat32.com) to the cable modem via a W95
box.

However, the 3.11 box says only a 386SX or better, 4 MB of
memory.

Without extended memory for 3.11, well, the other 2 should
work with just 640K running in plain DOS, anything above V. 3.3

Other products: Sun's PC-NFS, NetManage, FTP Software,
and Novell's LAN Workplace.

There are some packet-based approaches that were freeware,
but they were very pesky: Crynwr packet drivers and
KA9Q TCP/IP

We work with older computers (see http://www.linct.org ) --
so I run everything from DOS 3.3 to NT5 here.

(I put stuff like this in the "oldware" category, so can come
up with disk images -- but -- only if you're very serious about
using it.)

When Geoworks (aka NewDeal) wanted their DOS-based GUI to
run on a network, they used PowerLAN starting in 1997. I
installed it once, but never networked it. Their Windows
look-alike does run on a '286, I know that for sure. Heck,
it even runs on an 8088 !
